Heartsy and Lily entered Lewis Elementary School in February 2014, after the major snow storm. The kindergarten class I was teaching wrote opinion stories about which type of class pet we should get. We decided that a guinea pig would be the most beneficial. Guinea pigs are herd animals, so getting one was not an option. Heartsy is the bigger of the two and is the darker brown pig you see in the above photo. She is brave and loves to eat! Lily is not quite so brave and is happy to hide in the cage. She will come out for a baby carrot though.
The guinea pigs have spent the summer with me, but now it's time to return to school. They love to be social on the weekends and if you're interested as a family, you could have the opportunity to take them home. Many students are interested in the guinea pigs so there are some requirements from me in order to possibly bring them home.
Requirements:
1. This must be completely your (the parent's) idea. You must be comfortable with handling the guinea pigs and cleaning up after their mess. THEY ARE MESSY! This is not a job for the faint of heart. If you say yes, then proceed to the next step.
2. You must arrangment to meet me (Ms. Charest) at school. Open House is Tuesday (K-2) and Thursday (3-5) this week. I will be availble to meet with you during this time. Pop by to see me! The guinea pigs are my kids and I like to know who is taking them home.
3. Fill out the linked request form letting me know who to contact to set up weekend arrangements. The pigs must be picked up in the science lab between 1:45 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Friday and returned before 8:00 a.m. on Monday morning. If it's easier to do, you can return the guinea pigs and then return the cage another day. You are not required to wash any of their bedding, I will do this when you return it.
4. They come with a few bags of stuff. They must be separated from any animals you may have in your home already. Their cage does not have a top on it so it is important that small children and other pets are always kept separate from them.
