Meet Ms. Charest
My name is Heather Charest and I have been teaching elementary school since 2003. Everything I have done in my career has led to my work in the Lewis Science Lab. I studied early childhood education and had an area of concentration in Earth Sciences at the University of Illinois and Kennesaw State University. After a student teaching experience in Cobb County with a fabulous kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Billie Ann Beard, I completed my degree at Kennesaw State in 2002. After graduation, I taught first grade for five years at Hiram Elementary in Paulding County and then in 2008 I transferred to Cobb County. My first home in Cobb was Kennesaw Elementary School, where I taught both 1st and 2nd grade for another five years before being transferred to a kindergarten position at Lewis Elementary in 2013.
Science and exploration have been a huge part of my life not only in my own education and my job, but also in my personal life. In 2008, the Georgia Aquarium and NOAA chose me to participate in a teacher workshop called Rivers to Reef. During the workshop, we were taught about the impact of pollution and human activity on the local watersheds of Georgia. I have also had training in brain-based learning and in 2012, I completed my gifted endorsement. My gifted endorsement classes taught me the important of using different approaches to meet the needs of a variety of learning styles. Your children will be engaged to their fullest capacity every time they spend time with me.
I spend my free time traveling, camping, backpacking, rock climbing, kayaking and spending time with my friends and family. My absolute favorite places in the world are Colorado (the San Juan Mountains), Germany (the Alps) and Paris! National Parks are also a huge passion of mine and I have tried to visit as many as I can wherever I travel. When I grow up, I would love to be a national park ranger.
