Whats the Matter???
INTRODUCTION: Everything in this world is made up of matter. Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. The smallest particle of matter is called an atom. Matter comes in three states: solid, liquid, and a gas. Temperature has a great affect on each of the three states.
TASK: Investigators!!!! You must complete the following scavenger hunt, by answering all of the questions. You will need to take the time to check out each website hunt for the answers. After answering each of the questions, you will have a much greater understanding of matter. HAVE FUN with this!
MOLECULES AND THE STATES OF MATTER
At the following interactive websiteyou will need to pay attention to the temperature of the substance as it changes states.
States of Matter
1. What is the effect when heat is added to a liquid?
2. What happens when heat is added to a solid?
3. As the temperature decreases what happens to gases?
4. How do the molecules in a solid move?
5. How do the molecules in a liquid move?
6. How to the molecules in a gas move?
7. What are two different types of matter that can change states in nature?
CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL CHANGES
1. Go to the video first to learn about the difference in the changes. 2. After completing the questions go to the second website take the quiz.
Changes of Matter Video
Quiz
1. What is a chemical change?
2. What is a physical change?
3. Give an example of each change: physical and chemical.
4. List a change that is good for people and one that is bad. Explain what type of change it is and why it is good or bad.
If you finish quickly, continue with these.
ATOMS: If you have extra time, please, explore these websites and videos to learn more about matter.
Follow the first link to learn about atoms and its parts. Follow the second link to watch a few videos on atoms and molecules.
